Numbers 8 and 10 are especially ridiculous. As you pointed out, number 10 is true for debit AND credit cards.

And as for number 8, that isn't an argument, it's fear mongering!

Do you want your debit card information “to sit in a system for four months, waiting for you to arrive?”

What a ridiculous statement. As if A) the information is just sitting at the front desk for anyone to swipe and B) the information disappears as soon as you use it. It's a dumb argument used to make this list into 10 items instead of 8 or 9.

Number 7 really gets me riled up because people don't check their credit statement. One of the easiest ways to steal money is to take 5-20 dollars off the card every month. Since most people don't give their cc statements more than a passing glance it means these charges can go unnoticed for months or even years!

But debit cards? Most people check their account pretty regularly and tend to notice when money is suddenly disappearing.

Steve, the Crown Money Maps Financial Software isn't free but to us it has been well worth the investment, $60 I think. Back when we were deep in debt we used Quicken to document our finances and balance our checkbook but it did nothing to change our irresponsible money habits. The Money Maps Software forces you to create a zero based budget and allocate every dollar of every check to a virtual envelope. It also incorporates a lot of extras like bill pay reminders. We credit this software and Dave Ramsey for 6 years of debt free living.

I didn't know the Crown Money Map had the functionality to balance your checkbook, I'll have to look into that. I love Mvelopes as an electronic envelope system, when did it become a free service?

Thanks Jared! This is the perfect place to leave feedback (good or bad). I'm sure to see it as well as anyone else visiting the posts.

I was shocked that you listened to the episode within the first 12 hours of release! That's awesome! Because you are such a dedicated listener I will try to rant a bit more often (just don't get me started on the "build your credit crap", I'll really make some people mad).

Thanks again!

You wanted some feedback and I could not until now figure out how to make it beneficial to you. I like listening because I want personal finance information but I just think it comes off a bit boring. However, you sounded completely different in this Holla from the Impala. Your voice was different, it sounded like you. It was more natural and passionate and way more entertaining to listen to. It had nothing to do with what you were saying, it just sounded way better. So maybe rant more. It has to be entertaining and it was. But I have still been listening to you every week on stitcher for at least 6 months now. Thanks so much for doing it!

Steve I really this show’s topic. When I was in college and making $8 an hour I would always ask myself “how many hours do I need to work to make this purchase.” This was before I was budgeting and it made me think before I made a purchase on how much time I would have to put in to buy something. I can definitely say that by asking myself that question I saved myself from making some bad purchases!

Steve - great post. Dave Ramsey spoke of this on one of his podcast's last week. Just a great reminder that none of this is ours. We are only to manage what God has given us for the good of our household and others.

The biggest misunderstanding about Suze Orman's prepaid card, unfortunately stoked up by Orman herself, seems to be the notion that the Approved Card, as it is called, can help its users improve their credit scores. So it's time we set the record straight: the Suze Orman's card does not affect your credit score in any way, either positive or negative. Colleen Tunney-Ryan, a spokeswoman for TransUnion, a credit bureau that has partnered with Orman to provide her card's users with access to their credit reports and scores, states it plainly: "It is important to understand that this data will not appear on any TransUnion credit report at this time." I think that should settle it. Learn more here: http://blog.unibulmerchantservices.com/suze-ormans-prepaid-card-will-not-affect-your-credit-score.

Let me make this perfectly clear (sounds like something Suze would say, doesn't it?), I like some of the things Suze does. She does inspire people to reduce debt and pay attention. She does get people to think about personal finance that would rather be out shopping. So I wanted to look at this card objectively.
I would love to see the Credit Project come to fruition, I think TransUnion has a vested interest in creating a new product to sell. If she can pull that off then I'd be happy.
But that's the only real benefit that may come from this celebrity endorsed product.

Steve I really enjoyed listening to the MoneyPlan SOS podcast in 2011. Personally my two favorite podcasts were episodes #18 and #24. Jen and Bob’s story is very inspiring and Zac was a great guest! I can’t wait for his next book to come out. Looking forward to what the podcast has in store for 2012.

Congrats on a year of podcasting! From all I've seen, it's had some pretty big ups and downs but I'm glad to see you're continuing with your dream.

I really like the "who I am" sheet. This is the perfect time of year to think about these things. I believe I will use the worksheet with my wife to see how we've grown in the last few years.

What a wonderful message Steve! You are so right about picking someone to help you manage your personal finances - why pick the financial planner who can't keep their own finances together? It doesn't make sense!!!

Almost all pre-paid credit card products cost you money to buy, load, re-load, or have monthly recurring fees. It looks as if the Amex prepaid card does not, so that makes it sound more like a gift card, which I think is just fine.
There are people who don't use banks, they are off the grid, and this could be something they could use for travel reservations, on-line purchases, and other situations where you need a Debit or Credit card.
Thanks for the question Natalie!

What a great podcast! We had to do these same types of calculations last year when we decided to refinance our mortgage! We went from a 20 year fixed rate at 5.99% with 17 years remaining to a 15 year fixed at 3.79%. Because of the interest rate and term, we are paying less than we were with the 20 year every month and more of it is going toward principal. We bought our house as a fixer upper and have been working on it for the past 4 years, so equity wasnt a problem at all in our home.

We are much like you. We owe $53,000 on our mortgage and are looking to pay it off within less than 5 years.

Hi Steve -

Thanks for putting things in prospective. I wish I would have know more about money before heading off to college. If I had I would have worked extra jobs to pay for school.

I would love to know from you though, what do you think about prepaid cards like new American Express prepaid card?

I believe being broke and being poor are two different things. Being poor is a state of mind, looking to others for answers, handouts, and blaming them for their own problems. I like to think I can help them change their paradigm and move them from poor to broke. At least you have hope when you are broke and can really turn things around!
I liked your comment about "politically connected". Interesting way to look at it.

I don't think anyone would claim that the car companies and banks that said "Where's my bailout?" were poor, because they were able to convince the government to give them what they wanted. However, when the 99% club want their own 'bailout' they are described as 'poor'. So, basically, if you are broke and not politically connected and ask for a bailout you are 'poor'. If you are broke and politically connected and ask for a bailout you are celebrated.
Remember the first 'bailout' was the first time home buyers credit that was given to the real estate industry, because they were broke and politically connected.
If you claim that the words "Where's my bailout?" are a description of 'poor' then we should apply that description to not only to the 99% club, but to everyone that went begging.

My bail out isn't coming. God has been exceptionally good to me, but I'm still having to take a lower paying job to take care of my family.

And you know what? With this job I will be able to take care of them. It's not a lot of money, but it is more than enough for us to live off of.

Thanks Jackie. I've been noticing a lot of this "talk" around, more than usual. I had been holding on to this post for a while (could only come up with 9 good ones) but it had to be said.
We are a spoiled culture of having anything we want today without the ramifications for about 30 days (credit) or longer (loans).
I am not immune. I know I am spoiled and so are many of the "Poor Me" people around us. Compared to other countries we are RICH!
I believe we all have to be tested in order for us to grow. And failing the test should only push us harder to do better the next time. That is true for finances, relationships, and physical health as well.

Steve - great blog post.

No one bailed me out when the housing bubble burst! Was I bitter - absolutely, but I'm not going to dwell on it. It is what it is and a lesson was learned. Like you stated - it's all about perspective

Steve,

You know how you should listen to God when he continually speaks to you about certain issues and you try to ignore him - well this time it was your voice at the end of this podcast. It was like you were speaking directly to me! Again!

I will seriously pray about becoming a certified Dave Ramsey financial coach. I will also be checking into holding a FPU class at our local library this fall.

Keep nudging me Steve!

Thanks, Jackie.

It just goes to show that there is always paranoia in the air. The thing you have to do with money and investing is to have a long term perspective. Sounds like your financial advisor does have one, I think they are a keeper!

I like it Melissa! Opening a restaurant with cash is an incredible advantage over the competition.
If you are looking for some good research about paying for college (and how to leave retirement savings alone to do it) I would HIGHLY recommend a book from Zac Bissonnette called "Debt Free U": http://www.moneyplansos.com/books/debtfreeu/
